Section of Pathology and Tumour Biology

Professor Phil Quirke

This section undertakes translational research in cancer (gastrointestinal cancer (Quirke, Grabsch), breast cancer (Hanby, Speirs) and ovarian cancer (Burns)) and reproductive pathology (Walker, Orsi). Our focus is on translational research moving basic scientific advances into patient care. Highlights of the year include the award of Gold pinnacle status for research by the University. The successful Experimental Cancer Medicine Award following on from the 5 year NTRAC programme. The Cerebra programme grant awarded to Orsi/Simpson, the reporting of major clinical trials such as MRC CLASICC, MRC CR07 and MRC Focus and increased industrial collaboration with Genentech, Sanofi, Covance, etc…

Scientific highlights include a major increase in clinical trial translational research in breast, colon, stomach and oesophageal tumour trials. Rapid growth of our digital pathology facility, for use in national and international clinical trials, E-learning and the NHS bowel cancer screening programme. Developments in cytokine signatures are allowing the dissection of early reproductive changes which show promise in helping to understand its pathophysiology.

We thank our supporters especially Yorkshire Cancer Research and the Liz Dawn appeal for investing in the new laboratories and their ongoing support.
