The Section of Translational Anaesthetic & Surgical Sciences has a wide range of academic responsibilities. Members provide a high quality clinical service in medical gastroenterology, gastrointestinal surgery, vascular anaesthesia, critical care and malignant hyperthermia (a national referral centre).
Laboratory and clinical research projects are based upon clinical interests; for example, Professor Guillou, Mr. Jayne, and Mr. Burke (gastrointestinal cancer), Professor Sandle (gastrointestinal mucosal function in health and disease), Professor Hopkins and Dr. Howell (anaesthetic risks in critical situations).
Undergraduate medical teaching is an important responsibility for the Section: Professor Hopkins is Course Manager for Medical and Surgical Specialties Course, Year 4, MBChB programme and Institute Lead for Learning & Teaching. Members are also responsible for postgraduate training in relevant clinical specialties.
The Section aims to maintain and develop this comprehensive portfolio of academic responsibilities.
